Celebrate the Birth of Maytown at Mayfest
A visit to Maytown, Pennsylvania, will take you back in time to a quieter existence. Settled by German and Scots-Irish immigrants in 1760, this quaint community maintains so much of its historical character even today, some 263 years later. From its intimate residential homes to its center square, Maytown is the epitome of small-town America. And every year, that charm is celebrated when Maytown hosts its annual founders day festival, appropriately called Mayfest.
Hosted by the Maytown Historical Society, Mayfest is held on the first Saturday of May. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and stretch over two locations: Maytown Square and the Fuhrman Memorial Park. The activities in Maytown Square pay homage to the town's rich history. Here you'll witness a traditional maypole dance, a ceremonial folk dance performed around a tall pole decorated with greenery, flowers and ribbons. Dancers, holding on to the ribbons, will circle around the pole, weaving the ribbons in and out as they dance. There also will be a reenactment of the town's first wedding, plus historical demonstrations and characters.
Maytown Square is also the starting point for the popular House, Patio, Yard and Garden Tour, which showcases the town's well-preserved architecture. As you meander along the tour, you'll see some of Maytown's most historic homes and buildings — from a Colonial-era log cabin to 19th century buildings utilizing locally produced brick to Victorian-era homes and retail buildings. There are a total of 10 stops on the home-and-garden tour, all within walking distance of the square.
Mayfest continues at Fuhrman Memorial Park, where you'll find a lively atmosphere with more than 100 vendors. Shop from all of the local talent right in Lancaster County as local businesses, crafters and artisans sell their wares at the Makers Market. From homemade baked goods to handcrafted jewelry to one-of-a-kind art pieces, you'll find it all here! Grab a bite to eat at one of the many food trucks and enjoy live music as you partake in the entertaining activities.
