Explore the Conestoga Trail
Pennsylvania Dutch Country, with its wide expanses of farmland from horizon to horizon, may seem like it’s best explored on a driving tour, but a long hike will get you the up-close-and-personal experience you’re truly craving. On the Conestoga Trail, you’ll walk through the northern forested hills, wide open stretches of farmland, along the banks of the Susquehanna River (with some fantastic views, too!), and even into a tectonic cavern. Cross historic covered bridges along the way and enjoy the tranquility of the Conestoga Trail as it meanders into Lancaster City’s Central Park, transforming into the winding Conestoga Greenway Trail. To the south, the Conestoga Trail eventually connects with the Mason-Dixon Trail.
For a challenging out and back hike, park at the Pinnacle Rock Overlook and head to Wind Cave. The four-mile hike will be up and down steep hills, but the route is full of overlooks with magnificent views of the Susquehanna River that make it all worth it. You’ll also get to explore the unique twists and turns within Wind Cave. Contacts Shank’s Mare Outfitters about a guided exploration of Wind Cave; just click here.
While its entirety may be a little ambitious for an active day out exploring Pennsylvania Dutch Country’s Susquehanna side, there are many ways to enjoy the Conestoga Trail and its breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a stroll along the Greenway in the heart of Lancaster City or in the dark depths of a cavern, you’re guaranteed to have an intimate experience getting to know Lancaster’s natural beauty and landscape. Don’t forget to pack a lunch and bring plenty of water!
