Tour the Beautiful Pennsylvania State Capitol
Pennsylvania's State Capitol just might be one of the most beautiful in the nation. It's a priceless architectural and artistic treasure that serves as a symbol of democracy and freedom. Situated on the Susquehanna River, the capital city of Harrisburg is located about 30 miles north of B.F. Hiestand House. Tours of the state Capitol are available seven days a week, including most holidays. So no matter when you're staying at our cozy bed-and-breakfast, you can plan a daytrip to the Capitol to see this majestic center of our commonwealth.
Dedicated in 1906, the Pennsylvania State Capitol was the masterpiece of Philadelphia architect Joseph Huston, who envisioned the building as a "Palace of Art." Its design harmoniously blends Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts and other architectural styles to create a structure that exudes grandeur. The inside of the Capitol is adorned with art and ornamentation, including murals, stained glass and sculptures, that depict the state's storied past and its diverse cultural heritage. The price tag to build and furnish this magnificent structure was $13 million in the early 20th century — that's over $440 million in today's dollars.
The Capitol's centerpiece is a breathtaking 272-foot, 52 million-pound dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. "Commonwealth," a gilded bronze statue, stands at the peak of the dome. As you enter the Rotunda, you'll notice the Grand Staircase and three-tiered gallery, design elements borrowed from the Paris Opera House. The Rotunda's eight expansive murals, painted by Edwin Austin Abbey, narrate key moments in Pennsylvania's history, from William Penn's treaty with Native Americans to the state's pivotal role in the American Revolution.
The Capitol houses the chambers of both the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the Senate. These chambers are an impressive marriage of art, architecture and functionality — with remarkable stained glass windows, splendid murals and original wooden desks. It's here that 50 senators and 203 representatives pass laws that govern the commonwealth's 12 million residents. Visitors can observe legislative sessions from each chamber's public galleries and witness the democratic process in action. The Capitol is also home to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor.
The Capitol's beauty extends beyond its main structure to the surrounding Capitol Complex and Grounds. Visitors can explore the East Wing, which was added in 1987 and is home to an interactive welcome center and gift shop. The Capitol Grounds boasts 45 acres and encompasses not only additional office buildings, but a park, fountain, statues and monuments that pay tribute to Pennsylvania's veterans and fallen heroes and provide a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. The State Museum is also part of the Capitol Complex.
The Pennsylvania State Capitol stands as a physical embodiment of the state's rich history and enduring democratic principles, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the Keystone State's past, present and future. Visitors are welcome to explore the Capitol and take free guided and self tours to delve deeper into its history and significance.
