Your Guide to Exploring Chickies Rock County Park
If you're looking for a slice of Lancaster County's scenic splendor with a side of history, Chickies Rock County Park is where you want to be. Located between Marietta and Columbia—and less than two miles from B.F. Hiestand House Bed and Breakfast—this park is the second largest in the county, covering a sprawling 422 acres. It’s a spot that really shows off what our corner of Pennsylvania has to offer.
The park gets its name from the American Indian word "Chiquesalunga," meaning "place of the crayfish." And let me tell you, there's plenty to explore here, from the varied geological features to the rich industrial history that’s still visible today. One of the park’s highlights is a section of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which runs through the park and brings you to an old railroad tunnel called Point Rock Tunnel — rumored to be haunted. Whether you're on foot, bike, or even cross country skis in the winter, this trail is a great way to experience the park's natural beauty.
But the real star of the show is Chickies Rock. This massive quartzite outcropping towers 100 feet above the Susquehanna River, offering views that’ll make you stop and take it all in. From up there, you can see the Susquehanna River for miles. To the south is York County and the Wrights Ferry Bridge. To the north, the farmlands of northwestern Lancaster County are spread out before you. The hike to the overlook is short but sweet, about a half-mile on the Chickies Rock Overlook Trail. You can choose between an easy, flat path or a more challenging, rocky spur if you're up for it. Either way, the view at the top is worth every step.
For the adventure seekers out there, Chickies Rock is also a premier spot for rock climbing. With over 200 feet of vertical wall, it’s the largest exposed Anticline on the East Coast and a top climbing crag in the region. The traditional multi-pitch climbs here are a real draw for seasoned climbers. If you’re new to the sport or looking to hone your skills, both Valley to Summit and Adventure Explorations offer guided lessons that cater to both beginners and those ready to take their climbing to the next level.
If you’re into history, Chickies Rock has that, too. The area once buzzed with iron furnaces, rolling mills, and even had a canal and a trolley line. Today, you can still see remnants of those industrial days as you explore the park. And if you’re a Civil War buff, you’ll appreciate knowing that Chickies Rock served as a Union observation post during the Gettysburg Campaign.
For those who prefer their adventures on the water, the park offers fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on the Susquehanna. Check out Chiques Rock Outfitters to rent all the paddling gear you need. If you’re more into taking it easy, head over to Breezyview Overlook on the southwest edge of the park. With parking right by the cute gazebo, you don’t even have to hike to enjoy the stunning panoramic views.
After a day of exploring all that Chickies Rock County Park has to offer, there’s no better place to unwind than B.F. Hiestand House.
